Regenerative Agroforestry Workshop at Bethany Land Institute

About the Project

From August 17th to 23rd, 2025, a team of four members from Technology without Borders (TeoG) Regional Group Ndejje attended an intensive Regenerative Agroforestry Workshop hosted by Bethany Land Institute (BLI) in partnership with the Agroforestry Promotion Network (APN). The four members were Muganzi Peter, Kobusinge Christine, Apili Irene Esther, and Ndayishimye Ivan. The workshop successfully blended theoretical knowledge with extensive practical, hands-on experience. The training equipped participants with the principles and practices of designing, implementing, and managing diverse, productive, and sustainable agroforestry systems aimed at regenerating ecosystems and supporting community livelihoods. The primary objective of the workshop was to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to design and implement regenerative agroforestry systems for various purposes, including homesteads, commercial use, institutions, and dryland areas. The workshop was structured over six days, combining theoretical sessions covering the basics, principles, and design of agroforestry with practical fieldwork including farm tours, plant identification, system design, and actual planting. The workshop also included Interactive group work that featured designing systems for specific scenarios and presenting them and networking that involved sharing experiences with other practitioners and facilitators. The TeoG team gained valuable, actionable skills: a) The one-acre model design: a comprehensive design for a small family homestead integrating food crops (cassava, yams, cocoyams for security), cash crops (papaya, pineapple, coffee), fodder trees, and biomass producers on the same plot for year-round yield and soil protection. b) Principles of Regenerative Agroforestry: a firm grasp of biodiversity, densification, and stratification as alternatives to depleting monoculture. c) Organic input preparation: the ability to create their own fertilizers and pesticides, reducing reliance on external inputs. d) Plant knowledge: identification and understanding of multi-purpose plants for fertilizer, fodder, medicine, windbreak, and biofuel. e) Integrated livestock management: low-cost, natural methods for raising poultry, rabbits, and pigs within an agroforestry system. The workshop was highly successful and impactful. The TeoG RG Ndejje team is now equipped to act as ambassadors for regenerative agroforestry. The acquired knowledge will be directly applied to: a) Designing and implementing demonstration plots within their communities. b) Training other regional group and community members on the principles and practices learned. c) Promoting the "3Fs and 3Es" model (Food, Feed, Forest; Environment, Economics, Education) as a sustainable solution for food security and ecosystem restoration. Technology without Borders extends its gratitude to Bethany Land Institute and the Agroforestry Promotion Network for their excellent facilitation and hospitality. This partnership has proven immensely valuable in furthering our mission of promoting sustainable and appropriate technologies.
