WASH project at Adaklu District, Volta Region

About the Project

The Technology without Borders (TwB) regional group Ho embarked on a Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) project on September 16–17, 2025, in the Adaklu District of the Ho Municipality, Volta Region, Ghana. The project was implemented in three basic schools and in the Wayanu community. The initiative aimed at promoting hygiene practices, improving sanitation, and reducing the risk of preventable diseases among schoolchildren and rural dwellers. The specific objectives of the WASH project were to educate school children and community members on proper handwashing and sanitation practices, demonstrate correct handwashing techniques and encourage active participation, donate hygiene and cleaning materials to schools to support sustainable sanitation practices and engage community leadership in promoting toilet hygiene to prevent outbreaks of cholera and other waterborne diseases. The team visited Dave S/A, Wumenu S/A, and Wayanu S/A Basic Schools. At each school, the heads warmly received the team. The team of RG Ho delivered an interactive session on proper handwashing techniques, followed by practical demonstrations. Learners actively participated and practiced the techniques. Donations of hygiene and cleaning materials were made to each school, including brooms, dustbins, jumbo tissues, veronica buckets, liquid soap and bleach. Over 300 schoolchildren were educated on proper handwashing and hygiene practices. The provision of sanitation materials created opportunities for schools to establish hygiene-friendly environments. On the second day, the team visited the Wayanu community, where they were formally welcomed by the Chief and elders. Ms Ruth Assan and Ms Charlotte Obeng facilitated education sessions on community hygiene, with emphasis on toilet practices to reduce the risk of cholera outbreaks. Mr Gaston Hunkpe, founder of the Chapter, provided translation in the local language, ensuring effective understanding and engagement. The Wayanu community leadership pledged support for ongoing sensitisation on sanitation and hygiene. The WASH project successfully promoted sanitation and hygiene awareness among schoolchildren and the Wayanu community. By combining health education, practical demonstrations, and the provision of essential sanitation tools, the initiative contributed to disease prevention and improved community health. This project reflects our commitment to empowering communities through sustainable health interventions and aligns with the broader goal of reducing preventable diseases through improved water, sanitation, and hygiene practices. The project strengthened collaboration between the TwB RG Ho, schools, and the community in promoting preventive health. We plan regular follow-up visits to monitor usage of donated materials and reinforce hygiene practices.
