Borehole repairs and regenerations in Bowire, Oti Region
The regional group (RG) Ho, in collaboration with RG Sunyani, carried out a borehole repair and regeneration project at Bowire in the Oti Region of Ghana, a farming community located between Hohoe and Jasikan.
For several years, the people of Bowire faced severe water challenges after all their boreholes broke down. As a result, community members, including school children, were forced to fetch water from distant streams before going to school. This situation not only affected school attendance but also made it difficult for the community to maintain hygienic practices, especially in schools and households. The community of approximately 1000 people has been struggling with this issue.
The RG Sunyani team first conducted a pre-exploration assessment after the issue was brought to their attention. Following their findings, they collaborated with RG Ho to carry out the borehole repair and regeneration exercise. In total, four boreholes were successfully repaired and regenerated in Bowire. The project restored access to safe and clean water for the entire community. Schoolchildren no longer have to walk long distances in search of water before classes, allowing them to focus better on their education. The community now enjoys improved sanitation and hygiene, and the availability of clean water has also positively impacted agricultural and household activities.
Special appreciation goes to Courage Kodzo Kwaku and Attah Obed Kwasi, two dedicated teachers in the Bowire community, who first brought the situation to our attention. Their concern for the welfare of their students and community members led to this life-changing intervention.
We extend thanks to Wilo Foundation in Germany for sponsoring the project which has made a significant difference in the lives of many rural dwellers. We also acknowledge Mr. Hunkpe Anthony Kodzo of RG Sunyani for his outstanding leadership and RG Bayreuth for their partnership and support.
Given the success of this project, there are plans for more collaborations between RG Ho and RG Sunyani to repair and regenerate more broken boreholes in other communities, especially in the Volta and Oti Regions.
This initiative stands as a testament to the commitment of Technology Without Borders to improving access to clean water, promoting community health, and fostering sustainable development in rural Ghana.
