Drinking Water Well in Cameroon, Bafoussam

About the Project

Background

For many years, the Collège Bilingue Saint Thomas d'Aquin in Bafoussam has faced significant challenges in securing a supply of clean drinking water. With a total of 1,985 students and 30 staff members, the school is severely affected by this precarious situation. The lack of safe water not only poses increased health risks for the entire school community but also disrupts the smooth running of daily school life. Both the school and the surrounding community are forced to travel long distances to obtain water from often unsafe sources.

Project Goals

The goal of the project is to ensure a sustainable and reliable drinking water supply for the school. To this end, the following measures will be implemented:
  • Conducting a new field study (hydrogeological assessment) to determine the optimal location for a productive water source
  • Drilling a well to extract clean drinking water
  • Installation of a direct distribution system to ensure immediate access to water
A follow-up project is planned for the long term, which includes the construction of a water tower and the installation of multiple water connections. This is intended to increase supply capacity and enable more efficient resource management.

Who benefits?

The students and staff of Collège Bilingue Saint Thomas d'Aquin will directly benefit from improved access to clean water. In addition, the surrounding community will also benefit from the new infrastructure, as it will make additional water resources available. The project was initiated by the Cosatho Amity Club, an alumni organization of the school, and is supported by the Bayangam regional group, ensuring strong local roots and participation.

Sustainability

The project’s sustainability is ensured by several factors:
  • Careful planning and site analysis to ensure a long-term, reliable water source
  • Development of a stable infrastructure with potential for expansion (e.g., a water tower and additional connections)
  • Involvement of local organizations and communities to promote ownership and maintenance
In the long term, the project contributes to improving hygiene conditions, reducing waterborne diseases, and the overall development of the region. The Sustainable Development Goals addressed are:
