24th and 25th Dhulikel Adventures

Our day started at 6 am on Sunday not to go to chruch but to see the sun rise over the roof of the world from the Lodge and doing some stretching. After breakfast in this breathtaking scenery we headed to the Dhulikel Hospital (DHOS) for the morning briefing with all department leaders and the Head of the DHOS. At the end we were asked to quickly introduce ourselves and give a rough sketch of our project in their outreach clinic in Bolde. The hospital runs these small clinics with only five employees to provide basic health care to the rural community.

Afterwards we met our contact persons Biraj and Bedana. She gave us and two austrian volunteer nursing students a tour around this impressive place. Through building a network of global NGOs they were able to establish a impressive hospital that funcitons as part of the Kathmandu Medical School. From CT-Scan, Dentallabs over Solar backup power systems and a enormous outer patient department – everything is there. They provide services for the minimal price possible to the community and thus rely on donations from outside for investments on the infrastructure.

We moved from our Lodge to a Guesthouse were life is cheaper and more enjoyable with ten other volunteers active in the hospital. Here we finished our day by checking our matieral lists and making adjustments and new calculations where needed. With a short break for dinner that took us well into the evening.

On the next day we headed out with Biraj to organize all Metalparts for the incinerator. The workshop of trust for the DHOS is in the town on Banepa, tucked in the thrid row of buildings. Through lists, Biraj as our translator and simple showing, measuring and nodding we found all materials necessary. Even a door. And just like that we were done. Well the matieral is gonna need til friday to reach Bolder but we get a welder included in our package. So – Deal; since usually it takes three different stores to get what we need.

We spend the rest of the day, editing the final order list, organizing with Biraj, packing and going over our manual- as a refresher for Arne and a lesson for Henning. We decided to put that session on the rooftop of our guesthouse in the 6th floor. so work with a view.

Tomorrow we will set of to Bolde and finally see our home for the next two weeks!

Best regards from Nepal,

Arne and Henning
